“The descendents of Jehoiachin the captive: Shealtiel his son,”
~ 1 Chronicles 3:17
Hi James and Ellen,
You met last week your great grandma and grandpa on your grandpaa’s side of your family. Your grandpaa’s dad and ma live on a farm that is located a mile west and two miles north of Volga, South Dakota. Are you glad that you got to spend some time on the farm where your grandpaa grew up – getting to know your grandpaa’s ma and dad? Your grandpaa’s ma is almost 90 years old. Your grandpaa’s ma had twelve bros and sisters. Your grandpaa’s ma’s dad was born in the Holland, Michigan area. You were in Holland about ten days ago for your dad’s cousin Ruth’s wedding. When your grandpaa’s grandpa on your grandpaa’s ma’s side of his family was a kid, his dad and ma died. Your grandpaa has been told that his ma’s dad’s ma and dad both died from tuberculosis. After his dad and ma died, the kids in your grandpaa’s ma’s dad’s family were split up to go to different homes to be cared for. The dad in the house where your grandpaa’s ma’s dad was sent to had the same last name that your grandpaa’s grandpa had on his ma’s side of the family. When your grandpaa’s grandpa on his ma’s side of his family was old enough to work, your grandpaa’s grandpa on his ma’s side of his family moved to Iowa where he met a young gal at a party. After your grandpaa’s grandpa on his ma’s side of his family married the young gal who he met at a party, your grandpaa’s grandma and grandpa on his ma’s side of his family decided to load up all their stuff – including some animals, on a train to go to Volga, South Dakota. Your grandpaa’s grandpa on his ma’s side of his family – after a couple of years of living in Volga, passed a test to be a mail carrier – which he was for 35 years. Your grandpaa’s grandpa on his ma’ side of his family first used a horse and buggy to deliver mail to the rural houses around Volga. Your grandpaa’s grandma and grandpa on his ma’s side of his family had 66 grandkids. There are six kids in your grandpaa’s family. Your dad is one of 20 grandkids on your grandpaa’s side of his family. There were eight kids in your grandpaa’s dad’s family. One of the kids – a girl, died during a flu epidemic when she was very young. Three of your grandpaa’s dad’s sisters never got married. When you were in Volga last week, you got to meet two of your grandpaa’s aunts – Sus who is now 97 years old and Helk – who is now 95 years old, who never got married. How do think that your grandmaa and grandpaa will act like and what do you think that your grandmaa and grandpaa will look like when they get as old as your grandpaa’s two ‘old maid’ aunts on his dad’s side of his family?
David had a lot of kids. The Chronicler – in 1 Chronicles 3, recorded the names of some of the guys and gals who are in David’s nuclear family and the names of some of the guys and gals who are David’s descendants. David for 40 years was the second king who ruled over the Israelite people group guys and gals who were living in Israel’s land area. David lived in the city of Hebron for the first seven and a half years as he ruled as king over the Israelite people group guys and gals who were living in Israel’s land area. While David was living in the city of Hebron, he and his wives had six sons born to them. Their sons’ names are Amnon, Daniel, Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah, and Ithream. Amnon’s ma’s name was Ahinoam. Daniel’s ma’s name was Abigail. Absalom’s ma’s name was Maacah. Adonijah’s ma’s name was Haggith. Shephatiah’s ma’s name was Abital. Ithream’s ma’s name was Eglah. During the last 33 years that David ruled as king over the Israelite people group guys and gals who were living in Israel’s land area, David ruled from the city of Jerusalem. While David was living in the city of Jerusalem, David had thirteen sons – with Bathsheba being the ma of four of these kids, and one daughter – who David and Bathsheba named Tamar. David’s lineage continued through one of Bathsheba’s kids – who they named Solomon. Even though David obviously had a very unique relationship with God – as God the Father, – in that David was known ‘as a man after God’s own heart’, David had a weakness for gals. David collected wives and gals – which his kid – Solomon, also did when he became older. A guy – Jehoiachin, who the Chronicler recorded in verse 17 being in David’s lineage, “The descendents of Jehoiachin the captive: Shealtiel his son,” was affirmed to be a real guy during an archeological discovery in the city of Babylon. Some tablets that were found in the city of Babylon – that were from the 10th to the 35th year of Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian reign, listed deliveries of rations, Jehoiachin’s name and the names of five of his sons and dates. Your grandpaa likes to read about archeological finds – as they invariably prove over and over again the veracity and authenticity of what was scribed in the different books by different guys and which were compiled to make up the Biblical canon.
Your grandpaa is at times surprised by what he finds out about his own family’s history. Your grandpaa found out several years ago that one of his ma’s older sisters – before she was married, had a baby girl. Your grandpaa’s ma’s sister had a guy friend who wanted to marry her but . . . so your grandpaa’s ma’s dad and ma took Bea’s little baby girl into their home and family and raised Bea just as they raised their own kids. When Bea got older, Bea had a baby girl before she was married. Because Bea could not take care of her little baby girl, one of Bea’s ‘step-bros’ and his wife raised Bea’s little gal just as they raised their own kids. Your grandpaa’s ma had two older bros – Ren and Otto, who became very respected Christian Reformed Church pastors. Your grandpaa’s grandma and grandpa on both his ma’s side and his dad’s side of his family had Dutch lineage. Are you glad that you are a quarter Dutch? The real reality is – your lineage is the same lineage as David’s lineage. David’s lineage includes Jesus’ name in it.
