“I will surely carry out today what I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Solomon your son will be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
~ 1 Kings 1:30
Hi James and Ellen,
Why do you think that a guy would ever want to be a king? Would you ever want to be a king? There are a lot of guys who think that can be or want to be leaders of guys and gals. Your grandpaa does not think that it is wrong for a guy to want to be a leader of guys and gals. Do you think that you will be one day a leader of guys and gals? Your grandpaa believes that there will always be guys who have been hardwired by God to be leaders of guys and gals. Because your grandpaa believes that his Father God is a sovereign God – meaning that your grandpaa believes that his Father God is the overriding Supreme Being leader Who is in complete control of all of the universe that He created and that He has positioned every leader who He has on planet Earth at this time, your grandpaa knows that his Father God is not making a mistake when a guy who your grandpaa perceives as being a real turkey – which to your grandpaa is a guy who does not have the acuity or character for leading guys and gals, decides that he wants to be a leader of guys and gals and becomes the leader of guys and gals. There have been over history guys who were totalitarian, dictatorial or despotic as leaders who led over guys and gals by promoted genocide and ethnic cleansing. How would you like to have as the leader of your country a guy who will see to it that the guys are killed who make it known that they would like to have the position, power and prestige that he has? Your grandpaa thinks that his Father God wants the guys, gals and kids who are living on planet Earth to learn from how a guy becomes and comports himself as a leader of guys and gals. A guy can become the leader over guys and gals through force. A guy can assume being the ruler over guys and gals by using brutality and fear. A guy can become the leader over guys and gals through his popularity. A guy can become the leader over guys and gals through succession. A guy can be elected to be the ruler over guys and gals with the expectation that he will rule with gentleness and with a genuine interest in the lives of the guys and gals who he is ruling over. A guy can be assigned to be the ruler over guys and gals as their appointed representative and voice. A guy can be ascribed to be the ruler over guys and gals because there was a guy in his family who had been before him the ruler over the guys and gals who he will be ruling over.
The first two guys to have the power, position and prestige of being kings over the Israelite people group’s guys, gals and kids – God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids, were chosen and anointed by God to be kings. Saul was the first king to rule over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids. David was the second king to rule over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids. There was no succession from Saul’s family – after Saul died, for a guy from Saul’s family to become king over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids. There was succession from David’s family – after David died, for one of David’s kids to become king over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids. The Kings Book historian – in 1 Kings 1, recounts what took place when David was still on his deathbed. David was about seventy years old by this time. David no longer could stay warm and probably stayed in his bed most of the time. David had lived a very full life. David had fought wars and had killed a lot of guys. David had written praise and worship psalm songs. David had become known as a man after God’s own heart. David decided that his fourth oldest kid – Solomon, would succeed him as king over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids. David told Bathsheba that when he died that their kid would be the kid who would succeed him as king over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids. David’s second oldest kid – Adonijah, in the meantime – knowing that his dad would soon die, assumed that he would be the next king over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids. David had not been the best dad in the world. David had watched his oldest kid – Absalom, try to usurp his God ordained and anointed position as king. Absalom – after his plans went amuck, ended up having javelins stuck into him. Adonijah quickly found out that he was pushing the same button that his older bro pushed when he became impatient with wanting to rule over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids when it was nothing but a misguided, pride driven presumption that he would their next king. David may have had a hard time telling his kids that they were spoiled brats or coming down hard on them when they acted out. Your grandpaa thinks that it would be really hard for a guy who made bad choices in front of his kids to then punish his kids for the same bad choices that he had made.
Even though his dad was still living and even though his dad had not told him that he was to succeed him as king over God’s specially chosen guys and gals, Adonijah got some horses, chariots and fifty guys to run ahead of him and . . . Adonijah had Joab – who had been David’s army commander and the guy who murdered Absalom and Abiathar – who was a priest, align with him. Adonijah thought that by having a shindig and a sacrifice time at the Stone of Zoheleth that he could make becoming king over God’s specially chosen guys and gals official. The guys who were not invited to Adonijah’s bash were Solomon, Zodok – who was another priest, Benaiah – a guy who was detested by Joab, Nathan – who was a prophet, and Shimei and Rei – who were David’s two loyal guards, When Bathsheba got word of Adonijah’s hijinks, Bathsheba went to David to tell David what Adonijah was going to do at the Stone of Zoheleth. Verse 30 says, “I will surely carry out today what I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Solomon your son will be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”” David would then have Solomon ride on a mule to Gihon to be anointed as the next king over God’s specially chosen guys, gals and kids.
